Lisa & Frances discuss Inclusion and Diversity

Frances White and I shared an uncomfortable conversation today about diversity and inclusion, in light of current events. We spent a while working out what felt OK to talk about – the use of language, the points of focus, what we even mean by ‘difference’ and identity. It’s a big subject and here we skim the surface.

The main message from us is the importance of managers having such conversations with their teams; what does and doesn’t feel OK? What do we feel awkward about and proud of? How do we model being open about something we witness or experience that makes us feel uncomfortable? How do we take appropriate action to put things right?

Conversations are key. But they’re tricky to get right, with a sensitivity that also enables change, as Frances and I found this morning. And that’s despite us both being well-versed in supporting people explore such ‘topics’.
