Festival of Happiness
The last Alliance of Independent Agencies annual Festival of Happiness was an opportunity for me to talk about Prioritise People: Unlock the Value of a Thriving Workforce.
Nine months on and the messages remain spot on. Indeed, they’re now more relevant than ever as we begin to see a shift away from care-washing towards a focus on organisational experience. That’s what really impacts employee wellbeing and performance.
I joined Louise Aston, Wellbeing Director at BITC, Sharon Baker, Transformational Life Coach and Founder of The Freedom Formula, and Becca Rawlings, Head of People, Culture and Business at Total Media, to discuss some key findings from the report.
We cover some critical points that employers need to be considering:
- Psychological Safety: what it actually means and looks like in practice, including psychological contracting
- Role titles and the barriers that perceived authority can present to being vulnerable
- The role of line managers and their impact on employee performance; why we need to focus here
- Root causes; understanding unhealthy work cultures that create problems (regardless of how many initiatives you have)
- Individual vs organisational responsibility
- Obstacles to inclusion and how to rethink practice that is more meaningful.

Dealing with people is challenging. We need to start from a point of curiosity, the intention to make things better and the courage to explore unknown territory.
There is no magic wand, but you can make a big difference by getting the right people onboard, creating a business case for prioritising your workforce, enabling the right conversations to happen and using data to inform practice.
